Description

On 24 September 1975 Doug Scott and Dougal Haston became the first Britons to summit Everest, after climbing a new route on the immense South-West Face. They followed their summit with a bivvy just below the summit – at the time the highest night out in history.

Sadly mountaineer and cameraman Mick Burke died near the summit a day later, while Peter Boardman and Pertemba summitted a few days later and made a harrowing descent, finding the top of the fixed ropes only by chance. This classic expedition documentary records both the end of the era of big British national expeditions and is the harbinger of a the new alpine style in the Himalaya.

Marvellous stuff. I never thought I'd see this film again. In those days  filming very high up was well nigh impossible but what couldn't be filmed is vividly described by the still exhausted climbers once back in the support camps.  Heroes all - and fuelled in part by fags and whisky!
