Tashi, a 5-year-old feisty, little girl abandoned by an alcoholic father, arrives at school, perched at 7,000 feet in the foothills of the Himalayas. Her pants are oversized, always dropping at inopportune moments as she runs around the mountainous landscape, a refuge for these kids who hail from troubled backgrounds or are orphaned.

Tashi’s lawlessness dissipates under the guidance of Lobsang Phuntsok, her teacher and the founder of the school, Jhamtse Gatsal Children’s Community. Phuntsok, is a Buddhist monk who trained under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in India left his home to become a spiritual instructor in the US, hoping to introduce Tibetan Buddhism to Americans. In 2006, he returns to his native country with a grander vision: to educate at-risk children and give them a home.

Sometimes a film of faraway people and faraway places touches in such a way it asks questions about your own life. This is not your adrenaline fuelled adventure film but an uplifting story of Himalayan people. It is a very very good film - a must watch.
